The mechanism · The unrelieved watch
Why Can't I Relax at Night?
You have never fallen asleep first. You sit facing the door in your own house. Nobody has ever called that what it is, and it started a very long time before the man you are with now.
The unrelieved watch is what happens when a child is handed a post in the house before she is old enough to refuse it, and nobody ever comes to take her off it. She is not a controlling woman and she is not a light sleeper. She is a sentry who was never relieved, and a sentry does not stand down because somebody else turned up. She stands down when she knows exactly what happens next.
Nineteen years, and she has never once fallen asleep before he did. He had never thought about it until somebody asked.
What Is the Unrelieved Watch?
The unrelieved watch is the post you were put on as a child that nobody ever came to take you off.
It does not present as fear. It presents as competence, which is why it has survived this long without a name. You are the one who checks. You sit facing the door in your own kitchen. You wake when the heating clicks and when a car door goes three houses down, and everybody in your life calls you a light sleeper, which is a description of the symptom and not of the thing.
Where It Starts
Somewhere early, the house needed somebody to be keeping track, and you were the one who was awake.
This is the part that stops people recognizing themselves in it. Nothing terrible has to have happened. There is no incident to point at, no story that would earn the reaction, and that absence is exactly why you have never been able to explain yourself to anyone. A house does not have to be frightening to need a sentry. It only has to be unpredictable, or busy, or short of one adult for a while.
This is not the same thing as the supervision tax, and the difference matters more than it sounds. The supervision tax is the mental load that will not transfer when he takes a job off you. This is the reason it will not transfer: the job was never the post. Take every job off a sentry and she is still standing there.
Boszormenyi-Nagy named this in 1973 and called it parentification: a child handed a post in the house before she is old enough to refuse it. Everything written since has followed those children into adulthood and measured what it cost them, which is real work and worth knowing about.
What none of it has ever asked is what happens when somebody finally offers one of them rest.
That is the gap the unrelieved watch is the name for. Not the damage. The relief, and why it does not land.
Why Being Rescued Makes It Worse
The decent man’s instinct is to take it all off her.
He books it, drives it, handles it, tells her nothing so that she can enjoy the surprise. And she lies awake every night of it, and neither of them can work out why, and he concludes she cannot be helped.
He has not relieved her. He has taken her information away and left her standing there.
A guard does not stand down because somebody else turned up in the doorway. She stands down when she knows exactly what is coming next. A surprise is the single thing a sentry cannot be given, so every grand gesture, every treat, every thoughtful unannounced change lands on her as one more unknown to cover.
What Actually Stands Her Down
Repetition, and it is extremely boring.
He says what he is going to do and what time he is going to do it, and then he does it exactly that way. Then he does it again the following week the same way. Nothing dramatic, nothing announced as a solution, no conversation about it. Just enough of the same small thing, often enough, that a body which has never had reliable data finally gets some.
This takes months and it looks like indifference for the first stretch of it. The first sign that it is working is not gratitude and it is not a conversation. It is that one afternoon she falls asleep in the passenger seat, and somebody has to wake her.
If This Is You
Do not start by trying to relax. You have been told to relax your whole life and it has never once worked, because relaxing is the outcome and not the method.
Start by noticing what you are actually asking for when you ask what the plan is. You are not being difficult and you are not checking up on anybody. You are trying to find out whether the next hour is one you have to cover.
Then let somebody give you the answer, the same way, more than once, and see what your body does with it by about the fourth time.
The Art of Surrender is the long version of this: why you were posted this early, what it costs to be the one who never gets relieved, and how being led actually works for a woman who has never in her life been off duty.
Common questions
Why can't I switch off even when everything is fine?
Because the watch was never set to end when things are fine. It was set to run, and nothing has ever formally taken it off you. Calm is not the signal your body is waiting for. Predictability is, and those two are not the same thing.
Why do I always have to be the one who checks?
Somebody in your house had to know where everything was, and at some point that somebody was you. It was not a personality trait you developed. It was a job you were given, quietly and early, and nobody ever announced that it had finished.
My partner took everything off me and I felt worse. Why?
Because he removed your information rather than your duty. A sentry handed a surprise is a sentry with less to work from, still standing. Being rescued from the tasks leaves the watch running and takes away the one thing that made it bearable, which is knowing what is coming.
Is this the same as being controlling?
It looks identical from outside and everybody in your life has probably called it that. Control is wanting the outcome to go your way. This is needing to know the outcome in advance so that you can stop bracing, and the difference is the whole of it.
What actually helps?
Repetition, not rescue. He says exactly what he will do and what time, and then he does it that way, every time, for months. It looks like nothing from the outside. It is the only thing that gives a body enough data to stand down, and the first sign it is working will not be gratitude.
